Riverside High School is a four-year public high school located in Durham, North Carolina. The current principal is Joel County.
History
Opened in 1991 (the first class graduated in 1993), the school currently enrolls approximately 2100 students and is one of seven high schools in the Durham Public School System. The school offers classes on a block schedule on a semester basis, with students taking 4 classes—generally 2 core and 2 elective—each semester. Riverside is an accredited school and is also home to the Durham Public Schools' pre-engineering curriculum which is part of the Project Lead the Way Program.
Riverside's sixteen sports teams are part of the PAC-6 Conference, which includes schools in Durham County and the neighboring counties of Orange and Person. The school has fielded several state champions in wrestling, men's lacrosse, volleyball, and swimming.
Recent events
In 2007, Riverside was ranked as the 834th high school in America by Newsweek.[1]
In 2011, Riverside's Student Newspaper The Pirates' Hook was awarded the best student run newspaper in North Carolina.
Athletics
Wrestling
The Pirate wrestling team has won 7 state championships, their first two coming in 1994 and 1995 under head coach Jim Key. Head coach Walt Tolarchyk would later on lead the team to win 5 more state titles. They have had many state champions and nationally ranked wrestlers including MMA fighter Abel Trujillo.
Volleyball
Riverside's girls volleyball program has won 2 state championships.
Notable alumni
- Megan Hodge, Gatorade National Player of the Year for volleyball as a high school senior in 2006, Penn State volleyball player, 2007 NCAA Championship Most Outstanding Player, two-time AVCA first team All-American. Played in the 2012 London Olympics. [2]
- Weslye Saunders, Professional American football player. Currently plays for the Indianapolis Colts.
- Abel Trujillo, 2002 State Wrestling Champion; professional mixed martial artist currently competing as a lightweight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship[3]
- T.J. Warren, NBA Basketball player who plays currently plays for Phoenix Suns. (Warren did not graduate from Riverside as he transferred to a different high school).
