Rik Makarem (born 18 January 1982) is an English actor, best known for playing Nikhil Sharma in Emmerdale from 2009 to 2013.

Career

Born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, Makarem is known for playing cast regular Nikhil Sharma in Emmerdale. He has also starred in BBC's Torchwood- Children of Earth alongside John Barrowman and has featured in ITV period drama Foyle's War as well as period feature film "The Duel". Other acting credits include Consent for Channel 4 and ITV comedy "FM".

He is a classically trained actor, graduating from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama and won a Laurence Olivier Bursary in 2004 in association with the Society of London Theatre.

Alongside his acting career, he is an established song writer and is currently working on/arranging material for himself and other well-known performance artists.

In August 2011, he completed an Extreme Cycle Challenge for charity with Team Emmerdale, cycling 224 miles in less than 24 hours, from Emmerdale to EastEnders, in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support.[1]

On 16 May 2013, it was announced that Makarem was leaving his role in Emmerdale. His final appearance was in the episode broadcast on Tuesday 20 August 2013 when his character, Nikhil Sharma, departed the Dales for a new life in Toronto with his daughter, Molly, following the murder of his wife, Genesis Walker.

In October 2013, it was announced that Makarem would be appearing as "Toby" in Passing By at the Tristan Bates theatre in Covent Garden. The play, which also starred James Cartwright as "Simon", ran from 5 November to 30 November 2013 and was highly acclaimed by both critics and theatregoers.

In January 2014; Makarem announced that he would be appearing as Emmett in Morris Panych's, The Dishwashers. The play which was directed by Nikolai Foster also starred David Essex as Dressler, Andrew Jarvis as Moss and Jared Garfield as Burroughs. The play, which received some great reviews, opened at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre on 31 January (until 15 February) before starting a tour on 17 February at Newcastle upon Tyne, moving on to Richmond, Bromley, Malvern, Brighton, Nottingham, ending its run on 12 April in Cambridge.

In December 2014, Makarem began rehearsals for the role of 'Mark Warren' in a stage version of Peter James' best seller, Dead Simple. The play, which was adapted by Shaun McKenna, also stars Tina Hobley (Ashley Harper), Jamie Lomas (Michael Harrison), Michael McKell ( Bradley Cunningham) and Gray O'Brien (DS Roy Grace). It opened with great reviews following its World Premiere at Dartford's Orchard Theatre on 14 January 2015 before embarking on a nationwide theatre tour, which finishes at Worthing's Connaught Theatre on 18 July 2015.
