Right Guard

Right Guard is a brand of deodorant for men. It is also a brand of body wash. It is manufactured by the Dial Corporation unit of Henkel North America, which acquired the brand in 2006 as a condition for Procter & Gamble's Gillette acquisition because P&G has other deodorant brands such as Old Spice.[1]

Right Guard is the second largest brand in the male deodorant category.[2] The Gillette Company introduced Right Guard as the first aerosol antiperspirant in the early 1960s.[3] Since then, Right Guard has launched many new items and can be found in numerous antiperspirant deodorant forms.

Marketing

Right Guard is positioned for the sports enthusiast, as seen throughout its advertising during the late 1980s through late 1990s. Professional athletes such as Marvin Hagler, Hulk Hogan, Charles Barkley, Brett Favre, Scottie Pippen, Wayne Gretzky, and Vladislav Tretiak were featured in Right Guard TV commercials during this time. In 2008, Right Guard became the Official Deodorant of the NBA continuing its path of sports and athlete advertising. That same year, Right Guard also became a partner with Chris Paul, point guard of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Awards

Gillette's "Cool Spray" form factor (introduced in 2004) was a novel departure from the traditional shape of a spray can. The Cool Spray sprayed deodorant vertically from the top of a rounded cylinder upon depression of a side-mounted trigger. No protective cap was needed; a simple twist-motion procedure locked and unlocked the contents. The uniquely-shaped form, by design firm Herbst Lazar Bell, won the 2005 personal care award at The Institute of Packaging Professionals' AmeriStar packaging awards.[4] The form was discontinued in 2012.
