Rick Alverson [R. Alverson] (born June 25, 1971) is an American filmmaker and musician from Richmond, Virginia.[1][2]

Films

He has made four feature films in conjunction with the independent label Jagjaguwar.[3] His first, The Builder (2010), is an existential character study of an Irish immigrant at odds with the promise of America.[4][5] New Jerusalem (2011), his second feature, starring Colm O'Leary and Will Oldham, again considered the immigrant experience but this time through the lens of religious ideology.[6][7][8] His third feature, The Comedy (2012), premiered in U.S. dramatic competition at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.[9][10] Completed in the fall of 2011, the film starred comic Tim Heidecker in his first major dramatic role.[11] In 2011, he was awarded a Visual Arts Fellowship from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Production of his fourth feature Entertainment began summer 2014.[12] Its world premiere was at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. [13]

Alverson has directed videos for Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen, Bonny Prince Billy, Benjamin Booker, Strand of Oaks, Night Beds and Gregor Samsa.[14]

Music

In addition to his directorial work he has released 9 records on Jagjaguwar, most recently with his band Spokane in 2007.[15]
