Richard Edward Pain (born 21 September 1956) is an Anglican bishop. In 2013 he became Bishop of Monmouth.

Early life

Pain was born on 21 September 1956.[1] He completed degrees at Bristol University and Cardiff University. He trained for ordination at St Michael's College, Llandaff.[2]

Religious career

Pain served his curacy in Caldicot, Monmouthshire.[3] He was then a vicar in Risca, Six Bells, Cwmtillery and finally in Monmouth.[2] He served as Archdeacon of Monmouth from 2008 to 2013.[4]

He was elected Bishop of Monmouth on 23 July 2013.[2] Having accepted the position, he was consecrated on 21 September at Llandaff Cathedral and enthroned at Newport Cathedral on 18 October.[4][5] He is the 10th Bishop of Monmouth.[3]

Personal life

Pain is married. He and his wife Juliet have had three children together; two sons, Jonathan and Christopher, and a daughter, Amy.[3][6][2] Their daughter died in 2008 from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. She was 22.[7]
