Richard Offiong (born 17 December 1983) is an English footballer who plays as a striker for Durham City.
Career
Newcastle United
Offiong started his career with Newcastle United as a youth but never made a first team appearance for the club. During his time at Newcastle, Offiong was capped by England at under-20 level and loaned out three times. His first loan out was at Darlington in November 2002 on a two-month loan.[2][3] Darlington decided not to extend his loan spell for a third month in February.[4] He scored four goals in nine league appearances for the club.[5]
He was then sent out on loan to Motherwell in January 2003 for the rest of the 2002–03 season,[6] where he made nine appearances from the substitutes bench.[5] He joined York City on a month's loan in March 2004 and made four appearances.[5][7]
Overseas ventures and Doncaster Rovers
He left Newcastle at the end of the season. During 2004 to 2005 Offiong had some brief spells abroad in the likes of Turkey, South Korea, and Belgium.
Offiong joined Doncaster Rovers on a free transfer but was limited to only 5 appearances at the club and subsequently left at the end of the season.
Hamilton Academical
He joined Hamilton Academical in 2006. He signed a contract to keep him at the club until May 2009 in November 2006.[8] He was named player of the month for August 2007.[9]
Offiong netted his first senior hat-trick when Hamilton Academical ran out 3–0 winners at New Douglas Park against Dunfermline Athletic on 9 February 2008. This was also his fifth goal in three games against the former Scottish Premier League side.
Hamilton Academical secured promotion to the Scottish Premier League at the end of a hard-fought season. He made his Scottish Premier League debut in a 3–1 victory against Dundee United and scored his first SPL goal with the winner in a 1–0 win against Inverness Caledonian Thistle.[10][11] He signed a new contract with Hamilton in December that would expire at the end of the 2009–10 season.[12]
Carlisle United
Despite accepting bids from Colchester United and Greek Super League side Skoda Xanthi, Offiong joined League One outfit Carlisle United on 25 August 2009 for a fee of £75,000 which would have risen to £90,000 if Carlisle United achieved promotion to the Championship.[13]
Offiong got his first goal for Carlisle on 26 January 2010, against Exeter City in a League game, which Carlisle won 3–2, with Offiong getting a last-gasp winner in the 91st minute.[14]
On 30 March 2010, Offiong joined Swedish third-tier side Östersunds FK in a 15-week loan deal, which was to last until 18 July 2010. Offiong teamed up with Ostersunds FK's former Newcastle United, Blackburn Rovers and Livingston player-coach Lee Makel.[15] His loan spell was cut short by injury after only seven weeks.[16]
One day prior to the 2010–11 Conference National season commencing, Offiong joined Darlington on loan for the second time in his career on an initial one-month deal.[17] After his loan spell at Darlington, Offiong picked up a thigh injury which ruled him out of action for three weeks.[18]
Offiong left Carlisle by mutual consent on 4 January 2011.[19]
Gateshead
Offiong joined Conference club Gateshead on 4 March, signing a contract until the end of the season.[20] Making his debut the following day in a 1–1 draw with Altrincham at Moss Lane.[21] He scored his first goal for Gateshead on 22 March 2011 against Grimsby Town at Blundell Park.[22] He was released by Gateshead at the end of the season.[23]
Oakleigh Cannons
In May 2011, Offiong signed for Australian side Oakleigh Cannons.[24] He made his debut on 29 May 2011 as a 60th minute substitute in a 1–0 win against Springvale White Eagles.[25] His first goal for Oakleigh came 10 days later in a 2–3 loss against VTC Football.[26]
Blyth Spartans
On 29 September 2011, Blyth Spartans announced that they had signed the 'jet heeled' striker, following a spell in Australia, hoping that International Clearance would be received in time to face Bedlington Terriers at Croft Park on the following Saturday in the FA Cup.
Manager Steve Cuggy commented “We delighted to get Richard on board. He has electric pace and this will give us a different dimension to our attack, as well as offering us additional firepower upfront, which a couple of injuries have sadly robbed us of.”
“He's a local lad and was really keen to join us, in fact he actually got in contact with us about joining the club. He's trained with the lads all this week and has settled in really well and has done really well in the session.”
The player was also delighted to be pulling on the famous green and white shirt stating “It is a perfect move for me and I’m delighted to have signed for Blyth.”
“It is great that I could make my debut in the FA Cup as I know how important the competition is to the club. I made one of my first senior starts on loan at Darlington in the FA Cup and managed to get a couple of goals, so it would be nice if I can do the same on Saturday should my clearance come through.”
“I’ve played at Croft Park once before, as a Newcastle United player in the Senior Cup Final in 2001, ironically against Bedlington Terriers and managed to get a goal in a 3–1 win that night”
Offiong made his debut for Blyth on 15 October 2011 in a 2–1 win over Whitby Town in the FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round.[27]
On 13 November 2011, it was announced however that Offiong had left the club after just a month at Blyth.[28]
Johor FA
Offiong moved to Malaysian side Johor FA at the beginning of 2012 but had to retire shortly after due to injury.[29]
Durham City
In January 2014, two years after retiring, Offiong returned to football signing for Durham City.[30]
