Richard John Bartel (born February 3, 1983) is a former American football quarterback. He was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2007. He played college football at Tarleton State.

Bartel was also a member of the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars and Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Reds organization.

Early years

Bartel attended Grapevine High School in Grapevine, Texas and was a letterman in football and baseball. In football, he was named the District Offensive Player of the Year, was an All-Region selection, and named as an All-State selection. Richard Bartel graduated from Grapevine High School in 2001. Richard is married to Alecia Bartel and has two daughters, Remy.

Baseball career

Bartel was drafted as a pitcher by the Cincinnati Reds in the 14th round of the 2001 Major League Baseball Draft. He pitched for the Gulf Coast League Reds in 2001, 2002, and 2003

College career

Bartel attended and played for Southern Methodist University in 2003 then transferred to Tarleton State University for his final two seasons of collegiate football where he completed 161-of-276 passes for 2,033 yards with 16 TDs and five interceptions.

Professional career

Dallas Cowboys

Bartel was signed following an invite to participate in the Dallas Cowboys' mini-camp prior the 2007 National Football League season. He was released by the Cowboys during final cuts on August 30, 2008.

Cleveland Browns

Bartel was signed to the practice squad of the Cleveland Browns on November 26, 2008 after quarterback Brady Quinn was placed on injured reserve. Bartel was activated from the practice squad on December 24, 2008, when Ken Dorsey was placed on injured reserve. Bartel was waived by the Browns on September 5, 2009.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Bartel was signed to the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 7, 2009 until November 25, 2009, when the Redskins signed him from the Jaguars.

Washington Redskins

Bartel was signed from the Jaguars by the Washington Redskins on November 25, 2009 by Jim Zorn. After a coaching change, from Zorn to Shanahan, he was cut on September 4, 2010

Sacramento Mountain Lions

Bartel was signed by the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League on September 14, 2010.

Arizona Cardinals

It was announced on December 7, 2010 that Bartel was signed by the Arizona Cardinals. He played in his first regular season NFL game on January 2, 2011, against the host San Francisco 49ers. During that game, he completed his first regular season pass, a 31-yard completion to Larry Fitzgerald late in the third quarter, in relief of starting quarterback John Skelton. He played against the San Francisco 49ers once again, replacing John Skelton, on November 20, 2011 while throwing his first touchdown pass to Larry Fitzgerald. He was placed on IR by the Cardinals on September 3, 2012 due to a shoulder injury.
