Resource Hacker (also known as ResHacker or ResHack) is a free resource extraction utility and resource compiler developed by Angus Johnson for Windows. It is used to modify or replace most resources within Windows binaries including strings, images, dialogs, menus, VersionInfo and Manifest data. Resource Hacker also has a variety of command line options. There are some re-distribution restrictions with Resource Hacker although it is used by several programs like 7zip Theme Manager (until v2.0) and many others. Trancexx also started a ResHacker Project which is written in AutoIT v3 on December 08, 2008. The ResHacker Project is a resource viewer and compiler.
The utility is widely used.
The author stated in 2002 that he has "no plans to continue development".[1] In 2011 he stated that he will neither release, nor sell the source code. However since then he released three more updates with the latest version (ver 4.0) released on May 2, 2015.
- On November 19, 2009, version 3.5.2 was released as a beta. This build added support for 64-bit executables and for displaying PNG images.
- On September 16, 2011, version 3.6 was released with support for PNG icons.
- On May 2, 2015, version 4.0 was released with improved support for 32bit image files, resources can be started from scratch (with a number of resource templates), and numerous cosmetic improvements.
