Reel Earth Environmental Film Festival

The Reel Earth Environmental Film Festival is a film festival held annually in Palmerston North, New Zealand since 2005; it was originally named the "Aotearoa Environmental Film Festival".

Name

"Aotearoa" in the festival's original name is the Maori word for New Zealand, literally meaning "the land of the long white cloud."

The festival's new name makes use of the homophone "reel" / "real". "Reel" is a reference to a film reel, while "real" is a reference to the documentary focus of the festival.

Seasons

5th Season

In 2009 Reel Earth received over 200 entries and conferred merit awards for outstanding selections. Fourteen filmmakers from New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom, among other countries, attended. The festival screened to an audience of over 4,000 during May in Palmerston North.

6th Season

The director for the 6th (2010) season was Warren Jones,[1] and became Brent Barrett.[2]

The season opened with a "green carpet gala" on May 22, 2010.[3] The gala was led by Robyn Malcolm,[3] a well-known New Zealand actress. Other featured guests for the night included The Black Seeds.[3]
