Frank Shelton "Red" Perkins was a bandleader of one of the oldest Omaha-based territory bands, The Dixie Ramblers. Born in Muchakinock (a coal mining camp near Oskaloosa, Iowa) on December 26, 1890,[1] Perkins' band was based in the city's Near North Side. National Orchestra Service booked his gigs. He died September 27, 1976 in Minneapolis.

The Dixie Ramblers

Perkins formed his first band in 1925 in Omaha. A small band of six pieces, with most players doubling on several instruments, quickly grew into a medium sized territory band.

Bookings

Perkins' bookings were handled by National Orchestra Service of Omaha, Nebraska.[2]

Former members of the Dixie Ramblers (partial list)

† At one point, several members of the popular Light Crust Doughboys leaped out of the baking pan to join Perkins.

There's obviously some confusion here. The Red Perkins who recorded for Gennet was a black leader of a territory jazz band; the Red Perkins who recorded for Deluxe/King was a white country artist. The white western swing musicians who played in The Lightcrust Doughboys and Bill Boyd's bands likewise have no connection to the Red Perkins under discussion.

SOMEONE HAS CONFUSED THREE DIFFERENT PERFORMERS HERE. THE ARTICLE SHOULD BE ABOUT 1920S-30S BANDLEADER RED PERKINS. THE LATER COUNTRY SINGER RED PERKINS (B. 1920 IN KENTUCKY, BASED OUT OF DAYTON, OHIO) IS NOT CONNECTED. NOR IS EITHER MAN CONNECTED TO THE LIGHT CRUST DOUGHBOYS OR BILL BOYD. THE PERKINS WHO WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THESE WESTERN SWING GROUPS WAS ROBERT WILSON "LEFTY" PERKINS, A GUITARIST AND STEEL GUITARIST. ALMOST ALL OF THE NAMES LISTED ABOVE HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE RED PERKINS THIS ARTICLE IS SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT.

Move to Minneapolis

By the mid-1940s, Perkins disbanded and became a professional photographer in Minneapolis.[2]

Bill Osboen - Name is incorrect. He was my husband, Elliott T. Osborne (also deceased), father. His name was Wilbert H. Osborne (Bill) is the nickname. He died more than 10 years ago. Please correct his name so that his grandchildren and great grandchildren will know he was a great musician. If you need you any further information, I will be happy to assist.

Thank you. Wendy J. Osborne 5/13/2014
