Real People Press

Real People Press is an American book publisher, founded in 1967 by John O. Stevens in Lafayette, California.[1] Since 1979, it has been led by Stevens (Now Steve Andreas) and his wife Connirae Andreas. They are currently based in Boulder, Colorado. The focus of its books was originally Gestalt therapy and personal growth in general, with the focus now on neuro-linguistic programming.

History

Stevens founded the publishing company in 1967 to publish a book by Stevens' mother, Barry Stevens and the psychotherapist Carl Rogers, Person to Person. Through their meeting with Fritz Perls in 1968, and with the publication of Perls' book Gestalt Therapy Verbatim, they contributed to the development of Gestalt therapy in the United States. Gestalt Therapy Verbatim was based on recordings of the psychotherapy work of Perls from 1966 to 1968 at the Esalen Institute, Big Sur, California, with John Stevens' mother, Barry, helping in transcribing them. This was followed by Perls' autobiography, In and Out the Garbage Pail in 1969. In 1970, Barry Stevens' book Don't Push the River was published, which became very popular in the Human Potential Movement of the 1970s, although Barry Stevens herself remained critical of the movement and stayed apart.[2] They moved to Moab, Utah, and then to Boulder.[3]

Other books

Other books they have published are Hugh Prather's bestselling Notes to Myself,[3] T'ai chi master Chungliang Al Huang's Embrace Tiger Return to Mountain|Embrace Tiger Return to Mountain: The Essence of Taiji, and Andreas' book Gestalt Therapy Awareness.

Since 1979, Real People Press has mainly published books on neuro-linguistic programming.
