Rawiya
Rawiya is a collective of women documentary photographers from the Middle East (West Asia and North Africa). Today its members are Myriam Abdelaziz (Cairo), Tamara Abdul Hadi (Beirut), Laura Boushnak (Sarajevo), Tanya Habjouqa (East Jerusalem), Boushra Almutawakel (Paris). It is the first cooperative of its kind with only female photographers, from the Middle East.[1]
Newsha Tavakolian got together with Tamara Abdul Hadi and Dalia Khamissy in Beirut in 2009 with the idea of the collective, thereafter Boushnak and Habjouqa were asked to join. In August 2011, Myriam Abdelaziz joined the group and in 2014 Boushra Almutawakel was the latest addition to the group.[1] The collective made its official debut at the FORMAT International Photography Festival in Derby, U.K. in March 2011, which lead to further exhibitions at Empty Quarter Gallery in Beirut, Greece and Kuwait.[1]
Rawiya means “she who tells a story” in Arabic.[1]
