Ratnipora

Ratnipora is a town in Kashmir India, situated equally distant from three towns, Awantipora, Pulwama and Pampore. Ratnipora is known for its education and its literacy rate of 93%. Ratnipora has a very high number of post-graduate and doctorate people. It is home to the most prominent poets and educationists of the Kashmir Valley. The people mainly rely on government jobs, but agriculture is also practiced by a one third of the population. Ratnipora has been historically important for its contribution to education and poetry having produced notable poets like, Syed Shamas-ud-din Andrabi Gamgeen,Syed Mohi-ud-din Khushbash,Syed Shareef-ud-din Parwaz,Syed Mohammad Yaseen Andrabi Makhfi, Syed Jalal-ud-din Andrabi Aijaz, Syed Mohi-ud-din Nawaz, Syed Gh. Rasool Andrabi Gayoor, Syed Qutub-ud-din Andrabi Mahir,Syed Qutab-ud-din Andrabi Taseer,Syed Mohi-ud-din Andrabi Mufeed, Syed Salam-ud-din etc. 100 % population practices Islam. While there are three Jama Masjids, there are more than 30 other masjids, and a Hindu temple which is closed since the mass migration of Hindus from Kashmir. There is a shrine constructed on burial site of Wali Syed Mohammad Sadiq Andrabi. A stream namely Laar flows through Ratnipora, while there are four bridges connecting the two parts. To the south, there is a stream called Romush, and both Laar and Romush meet Jehlum in southern outskirts of Ratnipora. There are also a few brooklets which finally enter Jehlum. BERCY, an initiative of JKEDI has its office in Ratnipora. There were over twenty five Hindu households inhabited on the southern part of Ratnipora which were forced to leave their homes and hearths in the year 1990. Their land and other assets were grabbed or purchased at throw away prices thus changing the identity of the village which was once upon a time proud of its composite culture.
