The Ratchet Orchestra is an avant garde jazz musical group based in Montreal, Canada. The band was started in the early 1990s, when musical director Nicolas Caloia began experimenting with improvised chamber jazz. Members such as Tom Walsh, Jean Derome, Lori Freedman, Sam Shalabi, and Christopher Cauley soon joined.[1] Four members played on their 1994 eponymous debut.[2]

Their third album Hemlock brought in a large number of musicians, with 31 members counted on the back of the CD.[3] Among them was violinist Brigitte Dajczer, and it was produced by Godspeed You! Black Emperor bassist Thierry Amar, released on Drip Audio Records in Vancouver.[1] It was nominated for Instrumental Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2013.
