Ranbir Singh Pura is a town and also a sub-district and a notified area committee in Jammu district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Geography
Ranbir Singh Pura is located at 32°38′N 74°44′E / 32.63°N 74.73°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 270 metres (886 feet). Ranbir singh Pura is one of the most progressive tehsil of Jammu District. The main economic activity of the R S Pura is agriculture and dairy farming. Rice (Basmati) and wheat are major crops while mustard, berseem and vegetables are also grown. Rakh area of Badyal Brahmana and Arnia are very famous for vegetable farming. R.S.Pura has many rice mills for the processing of high quality basmati rice. The main tourist destination is Grahana Wetland, where migratory birds from temperate zones of Asia comes to enjoy this beautiful landscape. The main town is a complete in itself to fulfill all needs of daily life likewise departmental stores, garments showrooms, sweets & confectionary, fresh fruits and vegetable open market. Apart from these healthcare services, post office, nationalised banks (JKB,SBI, PNB,PSB) and one of India's leading private sector bank's HDFC Bank is also present. The major Educational institutions of R. S. Pura are SKUAST-Veterinary College, Govt. Degree College, Govt. Higher Sec School and many high schools. Main language spoken in this region is "dogri".
The town once had a train station on the Jammu-Sialkot Line.
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[2] Ranbir Singh Pura had a population of 13,563. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Ranbir Singh Pura has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 63%. In Ranbir Singh Pura, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. The famous personalities of R S Pura includes Naib Subedar Bana Singh P.V.C. He was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the highest wartime gallantry medal in India and Er. Rajinder Singh Chib, VSM, he qualified B.E. (Electronics) from BITS, Pilani (Rajasthan), Post Graduation in Industrial Management from IISC, Bangalore. He was Commissioned in the INDIAN AIR FORCE in 1963 as Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics) and served for 20 years in various capacities, including: Asstt. Director, Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India; Secretary, Defence Services Officers Institute, New Delhi. Awarded VISHIST SEVA MEDAL by the President of India. Inducted as Cabinet Minister in J&K Government in 1986 and worked in different portfolios viz. Forest, Tourism and Health & Medical Education. Sqn. Ldr. Balwan Singh Chib, who after being uprooted from Batala (Sathar), Teh. Bhimbar, Dist. Mirpur, studied at King George's Military School, Belgaum and joined Indian Air Force. He is a qualified A.M.Ae.S.I (Aeronautical Engineer). The tallest of political figures from R S Pura was Bhagat Chhajju Ram who is often called as Gandhi of J&K state.he was cabinet Minister for appxtly 40 years and represented R S Pura constituency four times a score unparallel. He also remained president of J&K PCC, the only non-Muslim and dalit leader to head the J&K PCC. He was also elected to Praja Sabha of Maharaja Hari Singh
