Rampura Phul is a city and a municipal committee in Bathinda district in the Indian state of Punjab. It is located on Dehradun-Chandigarh-Bathinda National Highway (No. 7). It is named so because it is located in between two villages Rampura & Phul Town. Phul Town serves as a Tehsil for villages in nearby area. City is main market for all surrounding villages and education center, since many students from villages come here for education.
History
It is a town located between two villages of Rampura and Phul and hence its name Rampura Phul.These are the twin towns Rampura and Phul, part of the town was founded by Phul, the ancestor of the Phulkian family, 1827 AD. Phul was earlier a part of the Nabha State. It was regularly built and divided into 8 agwars. Its wall is octagonal, studded with pakka gate ways. The fort at Phul was constructed by ChaudhriPhul. Even in 1904, there existed a Vernacular Middle School at Phul(Chottian Village). A railway station was set up in 1918 between the two villages and market towns grew on either side of railway track. Rampura side belonged to Patiala and Phul to Nabha Princely state. After independence in 1947, the town of Rampura Phul was under the Barnala District of Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU). In 1954, it was transferred to the Bathinda District of Punjab.
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[1] Rampura Phul had a population of 42,820. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Rampura Phul has an average literacy rate of 66%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 70%, and female literacy is 61%. In Rampura Phul, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Surrounding
Mehraj, the ancestral village of Patiala royal family, is situated 3 km away from the town. 22 villages emerge from Mehraj forming the Bahia group. Other villages near Rampura town are Bhunder, Mandi Kalan, Dahde,soochan, Gill and Lehra Mohhbat,Dikh,Jethuke.
COLLEGES
Recently Punjabi University Patialahas opened a college named University College as a part of Punjabi University Neighbourhood Campus, Rampura on May 31, 2005 by converting it from Tapasavi Puran Dass Ji Malwa College (known in area as TPD malwa collage). There are 2 girls college also in the town named Shaheed Smark College and Sarswati College,Fateh Group of Colleges.
