Drennon was a member of the national champion 1928 team, selected All-Southern that year.[2] He was said to be one of the tacklers of Roy Riegels in the 1929 Rose Bowl after he ran 65 yards in the wrong direction. This led to a blocked punt by Vance Maree and an 8 to 7 Tech victory. Coach William Alexander called him the "best all around guard that ever put a cleat into Grant Field."[3][4]
He received an appointment to West Point in 1930.[5]
