Rain, Steam and Speed is an album released in 1999 by New Zealand band, The Mutton Birds.

This, the fourth studio album by the band, marked the departure of bassist, vocalist and sometime song contributor Alan Gregg, and also guitarist David Long. Long's guitar playing along with Gregg's quirky contributions had previously balanced well with frontman Don McGlashan's pop sensibilities.

At this time, the Mutton Birds were trying hard to break the UK, but did not achieve mainstream success. This was despite consolidating their cultish following, and some strong reviews in magazines such as Q. A perceived lack of record company support and possibly misguided management decisions hindered their progress, though the band played live extensively.
