Coimbatore also known as Kovai, [koːʋəj], is the second largest city and urban agglomeration in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, after Chennai[1] and the sixteenth largest urban agglomeration of India. It is one of the fastest growing tier-II cities in India and a major textile, industrial, commercial, educational, information technology, healthcare and manufacturing hub of Tamil Nadu.[2] It was the capital city of the historical Kongu Nadu and is often referred to as the Manchester of South India.[3][4] The city is located on the banks of the Noyyal River surrounded by the Western Ghats and is administered by the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation. Coimbatore is the 4th largest metropolis in South India and the administrative capital of Coimbatore district. Coimbatore has been ranked 4th among Indian cities in investment climate by CII[5]

Broad gauge trains connect Coimbatore to all parts of India and Tamil Nadu. Coimbatore comes under the jurisdiction of Salem Division of Southern Railway zone and contributes 43.5% of its divisional income.
