Rahsaan Islam (born September 24 1986) is a Bangladeshi American film actor. He made his debut in international cinema with Simanaheen (Bengali).[1] Upon release, the film was a critical and commercial success, and Islam received positive reviews for his performance.[2]

Early life

Islam was born on September 24, 1986 in Chicago, USA to Bangladeshi parents. His father immigrated to the US in the 1970s and is a software engineer; Islam's mother is a physician. He grew up in Chicago with his younger brother who is an IT consultant.

Islam graduated from Lake Forest College with honors in Economics and International Relations, and was a member of the varsity Men's Basketball team. Playing the point guard position for the team, he was named an Academic All-American.

Career

In 2011, Islam quit his job in finance and began working in television commercials and various independent film projects in the United States. In the same year, he also began shooting for his debut Bengali film, Simanaheen.[3] As a result of his promising beginning in films, Islam was invited to be an honorary board member for the 47th Chicago International Film Festival in 2011.

In 2013, Islam made his debut in international cinema with NEQUA Studio's Simanaheen opposite Ismat Alamgir. The movie became a major commercial success and received critical acclaim. Bengali Kolkata Radio declared it a worldwide 'hit' after its first week in theaters.[4] Islam also received critical acclaim for his performance. The Dhally/Tolly Report wrote, "Islam took the challenge of learning to act in a new language and succeeded. His expressions are perfect and dialogue delivery is first class, a very fine young actor..Rahsaan Islam is someone to watch out for."[5]
