Ragnar Klavan (born 30 October 1985 in Viljandi, Estonia) is an Estonian footballer who plays for German Bundesliga club Augsburg and the Estonia national football team. He plays the position of left-footed defender.

A full international since 2003, Klavan has earned 100 caps for Estonia.

Club career

Early career

Klavan made his first-team debut for Elva at the age of 15 in 2001. A year later he joined to Viljandi Tulevik. After two seasons he moved to Flora in 2003.

Vålerenga

On 31 August 2004, Klavan signed for Vålerenga on a three-month loan from Flora Tallinn.[2] Klavan made his debut, coming on as a substitute, in a 4–1 win over Molde on 19 September 2004. Klavan would make one more appearance before spending two match being on the bench, without being used. Three months later, Flora Tallinn extended his loan with Vålerenga IF until 30 November 2005.[3] He stayed for only two league games as the following season, he was once again barely used, even from the bench.

Heracles Almelo

On 4 August 2005, he signed a three-year contract with Dutch Eredivisie club Heracles Almelo.[4] Five days later, Klavan played his first game for Heracles Almelo against RKSV DCG.[5] He scored his first Eredivisie goal and setting up Everton in a 2–2 draw against Vitesse on 31 December 2006.

He scored his second and first goal of the season on 24 August 2007, in the 76th minute in a 2–1 loss against his national teammate Andres Oper's club Roda JC.[6][7] On 29 December 2007, Klavan extended his contract with Heracles Almelo until 30 June 2008.[8] On the final game of the season, he scored the only goal in the match in a 5–1 loss against Ajax.

On the opening game of the season, he scored and set up a goal for Darl Douglas to score his first goal for the club in a 3–1 win over Feyenoord. That season, he would make 19 appearance and continued to be in the regular team until he left for AZ.

AZ

On 27 January 2009, he went on a loan to AZ, having previously signed a permanent summer move to the Alkmaar club.[9] The Estonian national player signed a contract for four years. He make his AZ debut, coming on as a substitute, in a 1–0 win over Roda JC on 4 February 2009.[10] While at the club, the club would win their first title in Eredivisie since 1981. At the end of the season, Klavan signed for AZ on a permanent deal.

The next season, Klavan played his first match, since moving permanently, against his former club in a 3–2 loss on the opening game of the season. On 29 September 2009, he became the first Estonian to play in UEFA Champions League group stage as he came on as a substitute in a 1–1 draw against Standard Liège.[11] However under Ronald Koeman, caretaker Martin Haar and Dick Advocaat, he barely get playing time and spend on the bench instead, as he made 11 appearance. But under Gertjan Verbeek, he would become a regular player under him. In the third round of Europa League qualifications, Klavan scored his first European goal in a 2–0 win over Göteborg. Despite losing 1–0 in the second leg, the club would advanced to the next stage, where the club would progress to the Group Stage. In the fourth round of KNVB Cup, Klavan scored his first goal in a 3–0 win over Eindhoven on 10 November 2010.

Augsburg

On 2 July 2012, he joined German top division side Augsburg on a two-year contract.[12][13] After appearing twice being un-used on the substitute, he made his debut, coming on as a substitute in the second half, as Augsburg drew 0–0 against Wolfsburg on 14 September 2012. Having played once in the left-back, he would since become a regular player in the first team, playing in the centre-back, along with Gibril Sankoh.

International career

For Estonia, Klavan is capped 99 times, scoring three goals. He made his national team debut on 3 July 2003 against Lithuania in Baltic Cup. He scored his first goal on 31 May 2006 against New Zealand in a friendly match.[14] Klavan played his 50th game for Estonia national team on 11 October 2008, against Spain in a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification.[15] Klavan scored his second international goal on 29 February 2012 against El Salvador in a friendly game, where he was also Estonia's captain for the first time.[16]

On 27 March 2015, Klavan played his 100th international, a 03 loss to Switzerland at the Swissporena in Lucerne during UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying.[17]

Personal life

His father Dzintar was also an international footballer. On 10 June 2011, Klavan married Lili Orel.[18] Their firstborn, a son named Romer, was born in Augsburg on 8 August 2012.[19][20]
