Raebareli  pronunciation  is a city and a municipal board in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is the administrative headquarters of Raebareli District. The town is situated at the bank of the Sai river, 82 km (51 mi), 70 km southeast of Lucknow. It possesses many architectural features, chief of which is a strong and spacious fort erected in 1403A.D. Among other ancient buildings are the magnificent palace and tomb of nawab Jahan Khan, governor in the time of Shah Jahan, and four fine mosques.

Rae Bareli is located in the heartland of the famous Awadh region which was the part ancient Koshala kingdom. In the early 20th century, the town was an important center of trade, and Muslin and Cotton weaving. Its population was 15,880 in 1901.

Etymology and Post Independence

The prefix Rae represents Rai the common title of the Kayasths and manihar who were masters of the town for a considerable period of time. At the beginning of the 13th century, what is now Raebareli and the tracts around it were ruled by the Bhars who were displaced by the Rajputs and, in a few cases, by some Muslim colonist. The south western part of the district was occupied by the Bais rajputs. The kanpurias and Amethias, other rajput clans, established themselves respectively in the north east and east. During the rule of the Delhi sultans nearly the whole tract nominally formed a part of their kingdom.

During the reign of Akbar the area now covered by the district was divided between the sirkars of avadh and Lucknow in the subah of Allahabad, the sirkar of manikpur which included the larger part of the district as it extended from the present Mohanlal ganj pargana of district Lucknow on the north west to the ganga on the south and to pargana Inhauna on the north east. The pargana of Inhauna corresponded to a mahal of that name in the sirkar of avadh. The parganas of sareni, Khireoon and the western portion of the pargana of Raebareli formed part of the sirkar of Lucknow. In 1762, the sirkars of manikpur was included in the territory of avadh and was placed under a chakladar. In 1858, it was proposed to form a new district with headquarters at Rae bareli, as a part of the Lucknow Division. The district, as then constituted, was very different in shape and size from the existing one and was divided into four tehsils, Raebareli, Haidergargh, Bihar and Dalmau.

The city and the district became famous as a political bastion of the Nehru-Gandhi Nationalist family. After independence, Rae Bareli constituency was won by Jawaharlal Nehru's son-in-law Feroze Gandhi. After Feroze Gandhi's death in 1960, the constituency was won in 1967 by his wife Indira Gandhi (daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru), who went on to become the first woman Prime Minister of India.
