RWI Essen
The RWI, full German name Rheinisch-Westfälisches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung e.V., is a leading centre for economic research and evidence-based policy advice in Germany. Through its research work RWI provides information on economic developments and their underlying catalysts, assists economic policy decision-making and fosters economic literacy among the wider public.[1] RWI is jointly financed by the German Federal government and state governments. In addition, third-party funds are raisesd regularly. The Institute was founded in 1926. Since 1943 it is an independent research institute. RWI is a registered, non-profit institution and is committed to serving the common good.
Research focus
The research work of RWI is structured along four “competence areas”:
- “Labor Markets, Education, Population”
- “Health Economics”
- “Environment and Resources”
- “Macroeconomics and Public Finance”
Report on the German economy
The RWI Essen is one of the leading economic research institutes in Germany that, twice a year (in Spring and Autumn), submit a joint report on the state of the German economy, the so-called Gemeinschaftsdiagnose (joint diagnosis). [2]

- Ifo Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung, in Munich in cooperation with KOF Konjunkturforschungsstelle of the ETH Zürich, in Zürich, Switzerland
- Institut für Weltwirtschaft (IfW) at the University of Kiel, in Kiel
- Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (IWH), in Halle in cooperation with Institut für Makroökonomie und Konjunkturforschung in der Hans-Boeckler-Stiftung, in Düsseldorf and Österreichisches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung, in Vienna, Austria
