Biography

Education

After graduating first in his class at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Scaringe obtained his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[4] At MIT's Sloan Automotive Laboratory, Scaringe was a member of a research consortium that allowed him to collaborate with top engineers from several major auto companies. Through extensive research and by touring automotive manufacturing facilities worldwide, he identified a need for additional flexibility and efficiency in car manufacturing and engineering systems.[5]

Rivian Automotive

In 2009, Scaringe founded Rivian Automotive with a goal of producing a fuel efficient, environmentally friendly vehicle at an affordable price without sacrificing style.

The company's first model will be a coupe, and according to Scaringe, will cost in the mid-US$20,000 range and have gas mileage of up to 60 miles per gallon.[6] Rivian claims that the design will result in good acceleration and handling, as well as fuel economy better than that of hybrid vehicles.[7] In September 2011, Scaringe was honored by being named Entrepreneur of the Year at the Florida Governor's 2011 Business Diversification Awards.[8] In late 2011, Scaringe was a feature interview in the Florida High Tech Corridor Faces of Technology series.[9]
