REYST
REYST (Reykjavik Energy Graduate School of Sustainable Systems) is a school jointly owned by Reykjavik Energy, Reykjavik University, and Iceland Geosurvey, delivering education in the field of sustainable energy, based at the University of Reykjavik in Iceland.
REYST takes a multidisciplinary approach, and offers students first-hand experience of the economic, societal, and natural forces that shape society for sustainable energy use. The programme aims to promote the advancement of sustainable energy use by enhancing the understanding of the science underlying energy resources, the technology to improve their utilisation, and the business knowledge of bringing good solutions to the market. Each year REYST has an intake of around 30 international students from a broad range of backgrounds.
REYST offers two graduate programmes, MSc Sustainable Energy and MSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering, an executive education programme for professionals and a summer school.
Academic programme
MSc Sustainable Energy/ Engineering The Masters in Sustainable Energy/Engineering requires 18 months of continuous study and the completion of 120 ECTS, starting in August each year. A personalised study plan is developed for each student with the assistance of an academic supervisor. Instruction and correspondence is in English. The programme is theoretically and practically broad-based with three main educational fields: engineering, earth sciences and business management. Students are expected to choose one field of specialisation.
REYST admits students once a year. The application deadline is 6 April for prospective students residing within the European Economic Area (EEA) and February 1 for those residing outside the EEA. A completed BS degree (or equivalent, 180 ECTS) from an accredited university is a requirement to enter the REYST graduate program. Applicants must also provide proof of their proficiency in English through TOEFL or IELTS test scores.
Administration
REYST's board is financially responsible for the school and it has one member from each of the three partners, with a COB nominated from Reykjavik Energy. An academic council is responsible for academic planning and vocational content of the program, including the selection of instructors and students and maintaining overall responsibility of matters regarding the academic structure of REYST.
Background
In April 2007, Reykjavik Energy, Reykjavik University and The University of Iceland signed an agreement to establish an international graduate program for sustainable energy studies. REYST's inaugural class began studies in August 2008 and graduated its first class on 1 February 2010.
Faculty
The Faculty and staff of REYST includes scientists from Reykjavik Energy and researchers and professors from Reykjavik University and the University of Reykjavik. Students attend courses at both universities as well as Reykjavik Energy's headquarters.
