Royal Air Force Chedworth or more simply RAF Chedworth is a former Royal Air Force Satellite station located near Chedworth, Gloucestershire.
History
It opened in spring 1942 as a satellite station to RAF Aston Down.
No. 55 Operational Training Unit[1] was stationed at Chedworth from August 1942 until February 1943.
No. 3 Tactical Exercise Unit RAF arrived 17 July 1944, becoming 55 OTU on 18 December 1944 until 29 May 1945.
The following units were posted here at some point:
- No. 3 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit RAF.[1]
- No. 6 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit RAF.[1]
- No. 52 Operational Training Unit RAF.[1]
- Fighter Leaders School RAF.[1]
It was also temporary home to several United States Army Air Forces units during 1944.[2]
Current use
Much of the site remains, including most of the two runways, one blister hangar (of 2 originally), the armoury, and 2 control towers.
RAF Chedworth is now home to the Chedworth Radio Controlled Flying Club.
