Rýmařov (Czech pronunciation: [ˈriːmar̝of]; German: Römerstadt) is a town in the Bruntál District, Moravian-Silesian Region, Czech Republic. It has a population of 8,609 as of 1 January 2012 of whom 4,237 were men and 4,372 were women with a median age in the city that was 41.5 years (men 39.8 years, women 43.1 years).

History

Until 1918, RÖMERSTADT was part of the Austrian monarchy (Austria side after the compromise of 1867), head of the district of the same name, one of the 34 Bezirkshauptmannschaften in Moravia.[1] The post-office was opened in June 1850, succeeding to that of JANOWITZ.[2]

In December 1930, the town had 6,108 inhabitants.

In 1938, it was occupied by the Nazi army as one of the municipalities in Sudetenland.

On May 17, 1939, there were 5,859 inhabitants, and on May 22, 1947 there were 4,230 inhabitants. About 98% of the town's population were German-speaking. However, in execution of the Beneš decrees, the entire German population, with the exception of a few skilled workers, was forcibly deported to Germany and Austria in 1945. Today the town, renamed RÝMAŘOV, is overwhelmingly Czech-speaking.

Museums

Municipal Museum in Rýmařov. A museum with rich collections tracing the history of the region from the earliest prehistoric settlements to the first half of the 20th century. Major collections are also on the development of mining and weaving, the two most prominent branch of this area. The permanent exhibit of the exhibition is also rich geological mapping of rock composition field. The museum also operates the Octopus Gallery .
