Quercus welshii (wavy leaf oak, shinnery oak, Tucker oak) is a shrub in the beech family (Fagaceae) found in the Colorado Plateau and Canyonlands region of the southwestern United States.[2]:143
Description
Growth pattern
It is a deciduous shrub from 2 to 6 feet (0.61 to 1.83 m) tall.[2]:143
Roots, stems, and leaves
It has an elaborate root system that helps stabilize soils in sand desert scrub communities.[2]:143
Elliptical or inversely lanceolate leaves with 6-10 lobes along the margins, with pointed tips, sometimes with lobes also being toothed.[2]:143
Leaves have dense hairs on both sides, growing to from 1⁄2 to 2 inches (1.3 to 5.1 cm) and becoming smooth with age.[2]:143
It is stabilized in sandy soils by complex root systems.[2]:143
Inflorescence and fruit
It blooms from March to June.[2]:143
Male and female flowers are in separate downward hanging clusters.[2]:143
Acorns are 1⁄2 to 3⁄4 inch (13 to 19 mm) long.[2]:143
Habitat and range
It can be found in Sand desert shrub communities, and sandy soils of blackbrush scrub and pinyon juniper woodland communities across the Southwest.[2]:143
