It is financially supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and a wide range of other partners. It brings new innovative musical experiences to the far flung communities as well as major cities of Queensland.[1]

The festival began in 1998.[1] The 2009 event was opened on Thursday Island with a performance by Black Arm Band.[2]
