Quantum Break is an upcoming third-person shooter action game to be released for the Xbox One. It is being developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by Microsoft Studios. A Quantum Break digital live-action series is also in production. The game will feature digital episodes that interact with the game based on the player's choices.

Gameplay

The game is played from a cover-based third-person perspective, with time manipulation powers.[1] The gameplay is split into segments. After playing through a segment of the game an episode of the digital show will play.

Plot

Quantum Break is set at and around the fictional North Eastern U.S. Riverport University[2] where a time travel experiment has gone wrong. The event not only causes time to start breaking down, but also grants the three main characters—Jack Joyce, Beth Wilder, and Paul Serene—the ability to manipulate time. For example, Serene, the main antagonist, can see into the future to decide which choices to make in the present;[3] while Joyce, one of the two protagonists, can stop time. The two are pursued by Monarch Solutions, a corporation founded by Serene.

Development

The game was revealed with a teaser trailer during the Xbox One reveal event on 21 May 2013.[4] While developing the game, developers Remedy Entertainment consulted a scientist lecturer who had worked at CERN who taught them how to write the plot in such a way that it adhered to current theoretical physics.[3] The game was initially scheduled for release in 2014[5] but was subsequently delayed till 2015. Then it was further delayed to 2016 so as to make the final product more "polished" while not clashing with other Microsoft exclusives scheduled to be released in late 2015.[6] Remedy has created a brand new engine to power Quantum Break called the "Northlight Engine".[7]

Digital series

A Quantum Break live-action series is also in production, with Remedy stating that "how you play the game impacts the show, and the show informs how you play the game."[8] At the end of each game episode the player will be presented with a choice, that affects the events in both the game and the show.
