Qatar Canadian School (QCS) is the only Canadian school in Qatar. QCS has existed since 2006, and has carried the Alberta accreditation since 2010[1] The school operates from grades kindergarten to 12th grade.[2]

History

Shortly after the College of the North Atlantic Qatar (CNA-Q) opened its doors, a school providing the Canadian curriculum was requested by many parents who worked at CNA-Q. Qatar Canadian School (QCS) was created to meet this demand.[3] It was founded in 2006 but relocated in 2007 in order to accommodate a student population of over 300 students. While the school was initially designed to educate the children of Canadian expatriates with a Canadian curriculum, the school is open to students from all nationalities.[4] On June 26th 2014, Qatar Canadian School will have its first graduating class.[2]

Education

QCS follows the Alberta Curriculum as a well as a curriculum outlined by the Supreme Education Council Qatar, and follows the rulings of the SEC.[5] QCS grants Alberta high school diplomas to students based on a credit system. To complete senior high, students must be awarded 100 credits. Students are awarded credits for each course they complete with satisfactory results. In addition, Grade 12 students must write and pass diploma examinations in core subject areas to graduate. Diploma examinations are provincially administered and account for 50 percent of the students' final grade in the course.[6] Alberta's High School diploma is recognized across North America and throughout the world. High school graduates have the opportunity to continue their education at Alberta's fine post secondary institutions or to attend some of the most prestigious universities and colleges in the world.

Admission

English competency is a requirement for acceptance. Entry to all age groups at QCS is by selection, in the form of an application, academic screening, receipt of satisfactory reports, and/or an interview. The applicant may be required to take a standardized test, as well as, English and Math test. With the parent's consent, the child's previous school may be contacted for additional information.

Location

QCS is located in Doha, Qatar. It is in the Al-Markhiya region (Gharaffa). The building can be distinguished by surrounding building by the two flag poles raised holding a Canadian flag and a Qatari Flag.

Facilities

Despite its small size, QCS provides a fairly wide range of facilities. QCS offers teaching spaces that include:

Although QCS has an outdoor area and an inner courtyard, most physical Education classes are conducted off site at the CNAQ.[2]

Faculty

QCS staff are certified teachers who have teaching experience in Canada. Since QCS is accredited by the province of Alberta, teachers must have a teaching certificate from a province in Canada and be eligible for certification status in Alberta.
