The Qandil Mountains are a mountainous area of northern Iraq near the Iraq–Iran border, the Qandil mountain range extends to a depth of nearly 30 kilometers inside Turkish territory. Often the militants organization PKK infiltrating through Turkish territory to fight Turkish troops. And also the PJAK party stationed near the Iraq-Iran border to infiltrate deep into Iranian territory to fight the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. The region belongs to the Zagros mountain range and is difficult to access. Its highest peaks reach up to 3,000m and more.
The territory is notable as a sanctuary for the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). This organization controls an area of roughly 50 km², which has been bombarded by the Turkish Air Force and shelled by Iranian artillery for several years.
