The league has 12 teams representing the 12 cities of Ampang, Bangsar, Cheras, Kajang, Kepong, Klang, Muar, Nusajaya, Petaling, Petaling Jaya, Puchong and Serdang. The league kicked off at Sports Arena Sentosa with a gala ceremony on 25 November 2014. It is officially sponsored by Kopiko.

History

Origin

It was introduced to provide a platform for both local and foreign players to strut their stuff, also aiming to make it one of the most lucrative badminton leagues in the world. The Purple League's supplementary purpose is to find young, new players who may potentially replace Malaysia national team players. Malaysia has produced many Asian and world junior champions but none of them able to achieve success as senior players like Lee Chong Wei. The Purple League follows in the footsteps of other countries with their own professional badminton leagues such as India, China and Indonesia.[3][4][5]
