Purdue University Press, founded in 1960, is a university press that is part of Purdue University. It is a unit of Purdue University Libraries.
History
An administrative unit of Purdue University Libraries, Purdue University Press has its roots in the 1960 founding of Purdue University Studies by President Frederick Hovde on a $12,000 grant from the Purdue Research Foundation. This was the result of a committee appointed by President Hovde after the Department of English lamented the lack of publishing venues in the humanities. The first Editorial Board was headed by Robert B. Ogle. William Whalen, Director of the Office of Publications, became the part-time Director of Purdue University Studies. Diane Dubriel was the first full-time employee. Verna Emery was Managing Editor from 1977 to 1990, succeeded by Margaret Hunt who served until 2008. Other long-serving employees who helped build the Press's reputation were Carolyn McGrew (1990-2002), and Beverly Carrell (1988-1996), and Donna VanLeer (1989-2008). On September 12, 1974, Purdue University Studies became Purdue University Press. In June 1992 William Whalen retired and David Sanders was appointed the first full-time Director of the Press serving until 1996. Also in 1992 administrative responsibility for the Press was transferred to the Dean of Libraries. Press Director Sanders was succeeded by Tom Bacher (1997-2008) and Charles T. Wilkinson (2008-2014). Under Sanders, Bacher, and Wilkinson the range of books published by the Press grew to reflect the work from other Colleges at Purdue University especially in the areas of agriculture, health, and engineering. Purdue University Press publishes print and ebook monograph series in a range of subject areas from literary and cultural studies to the study of the human-animal bond. In 1993 Purdue University Press was admitted to membership of the Association of American University Presses. Purdue University Press publishes around 25 books a year and 20 learned journals in print, in print & online, and online only formats in collaboration with Purdue University Libraries https://www.lib.purdue.edu/.

Dedicated to the dissemination of scholarly and professional information, Purdue University Press publishes resources in several key subject areas including technology, health, history, veterinary medicine, sociology, and other fields in the sciences, the humanities, and social sciences. As the scholarly publishing arm of Purdue University and a unit of Purdue Libraries, the Press is also a partner for university faculty and staff, centers, and departments, wishing to disseminate the results of their research. 1) The ARTL@S Bulletin <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/artlas/> ISSN 2264-2668 is a peer-reviewed transdisciplinary journal devoted to spatial and transnational questions in the history of the arts. The journal promises to never separate methodology and history, and to support innovative research and new methodologies. Its aims & objectives are twofold: 1) a focus on the “transnational” as constituted by exchange between the local and the global or between the national and the international and 2) an openness to innovation in research methods, particularly the quantitative possibilities offered by digital mapping and data visualization.
2) CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/clcweb> ISSN 1481-4374 (1999-)—the peer-reviewed, full-text, and open-access humanities and social sciences journal published by Purdue University Press—publishes new scholarship following tenets of the discipline of comparative literature and the field of cultural studies designated as "comparative cultural studies." The journal publishes articles and review articles of scholarly books. The journal also publishes research material such as extensive bibliographies in its Library Series <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/clcweblibrary/>. Articles published in the journal are indexed in the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (Chadwyck-Healey), the Arts and Humanities Citation Index (Thomson Reuters ISI-AHCI), the Humanities Index (Wilson), Humanities International Complete (EBSCO), the International Bibliography of the Modern Language Association of America, and Scopus (Elsevier). 3) Education & Culture: The Journal of the John Dewey Society <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/eandc/> , published twice yearly by Purdue University Press, takes an integrated view of philosophical, historical, and sociological issues in education. Submissions of Dewey scholarship, as well as work inspired by Dewey's many interests, are welcome. Members of the John Dewey Society receive the journal as part of their membership in the society. The journal publishes critical essays, research studies, essay and book reviews, and “rejoinder” essays. Recommended lengths vary for critical essays, research studies, or essay reviews (7500 words); book reviews (1000-2000 words); and commentaries or rejoinders to published pieces (800 words). The journal's articles are made available in open access hosted on Purdue e-Pubs the online publishing platform of Purdue University.
4) First Opinions, Second Reactions: Innovative Online Reviews of Literature for Children and Young Adults <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/fosr/> ISSN 2152-9043 publishes book reviews which meet the needs of K-12 teachers of Language Arts, parents and children, and public and school librarians. FOSR invites submissions, but also commissions particular scholars and writers to prepare articles for each issue.
5) Gifted Children <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/giftedchildren/> ISSN 2326-1544 is the peer-reviewed electronic journal of the AERA Special Interest Group for Research on Giftedness, Creativity, and Talent. It serves as a vehicle for distribution of research reports and resources, such as methodological information and book reviews, that will be of interest to researchers in gifted education. Articles are published free-of-charge so that they are immediately accessible to practitioners and scholars worldwide.
6) Global Business Languages <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/gbl/> ISSN 1086-7627 (print) & ISSN 2165-6401 (online) is an annual publication by Purdue University Press containing articles on issues related to foreign languages, and English as a Second Language, taught for specific purposes (business, science, hotel and restaurant, law, etc.). We encourage submissions of manuscripts pertaining to Chinese, English for non-natives, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish research, and others. All articles must be written primarily in English, with foreign language examples as needed.
7) Impact: Profile / Directory <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/imp/> ISSN 2330-7722 is a collection of faculty profiles in order to facilitate readers' ability to identify best practices in course transformation processes and teaching. The journal is designed to enhance the scholarship of pedagogy and learning in that it creates case studies of field specific course transformation processes and outcomes which can become the basis for conference presentations and scholarly articles making teaching practices public.
8) The Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-based Learning <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/ijpbl/> ISSN 1541-5015 publishes relevant, interesting, and challenging peer-reviewed articles of research, analysis, or promising practice related to all aspects of implementing problem-based learning in K–12 and post-secondary classrooms. The journal is published in open access. This means that it uses a funding model that does not charge readers or their institutions for access. Readers may freely read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles. The publication of the journal is currently made possible by generous support from the Teaching Academy at Purdue University (<http://www.teachingacademy.purdue.edu/>). Publications in the journal are indexed in the American Psychological Association's PsycINFO; EBSCO's Education Research Complete and TOC Premier (Table of Contents); H.W. 10) The Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/jate/> ISSN 2159-6670 is an open-access, refereed publication serving the needs of collegiate and industrial scholars and researchers in the multidisciplinary fields of aviation technology, engineering, and human factors. A key focus of the journal is to promote the bridging of these fields by publishing scholarly articles related to the integration of theory and application in an academically rigorous, theoretically sound manner. This process may consist of researchers working collaboratively toward a mutually supported end product or process improvement that is properly conceptualized using theory and made practical through application. The journal publishes both quantitative and qualitative research articles. Relative topics include air carrier and general aviation flight and ground operations, the technological aspects of airport operation, aviation maintenance and engineering, aviation human factors and applied training research in both collegiate and industry settings, and significant developmental and historical topics related to these areas.
11) The Journal of Contemporary Anthropology <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/jca/> ISSN 2150-3311 is published by the Department of Anthropology at Purdue University. The journal provides a unique and important new outlet for graduate student research and professionalization.
12) The Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/jhpee/> ISSN 2327-2937 is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes empirical and theoretical articles with relevance to human performance in extreme environments defined as settings that possess extraordinary technological, social, and physical components which require significant human adaptation for successful interaction and performance. The journal's readership includes scholars, practitioners, and professionals in industry, the armed forces, and academic institutions who specialize in issues related to extreme environments.
13) The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/jpur/> has been established to publish outstanding research papers written by Purdue undergraduates from all disciplines who have completed faculty-mentored research projects. The journal is run by students, but behind the scenes is a unique partnership between Purdue University Press and other departments of Purdue University Libraries, working with Purdue Marketing and Media and the Writing Lab, based in the Department of English. Publication of JPUR is sponsored by the Office of the Provost at Purdue University.
14) The Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/jpeer/> ISSN 2157-9288 is published on an open-access, public-good basis by Purdue University Press. Open access allows research to be freely available to all—including those from developing countries whose academic institutions may not be able to afford costly publications—in the interests of accelerating scientific progress, and ultimately resulting in public good. Open access not only ensures the widest dissemination of research possible, but also the greatest impact, by allowing others to cite, re-purpose, and build upon existing published research. The journal is dedicated to addressing the downward trends in engineering interest, preparedness, and representation; to transforming P‐12 education to include engineering; to preparing a globally competitive engineering workforce; and ultimately to creating a society of engineering‐literate citizens.
15) The Journal of Problem Solving <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/jps/> ISSN 1932-6246 is a multidisciplinary journal that publishes empirical and theoretical papers on mental mechanisms involved in problem solving. The journal welcomes original and rigorous research in all areas of human problem solving, with special interest in those difficult problems in which human beings outperform artificial systems. The Journal encourages submissions from psychology, computer science, mathematics, operations research, and neuroscience.
16) The Journal of Terrestrial Observation <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/jto/> ISSN 1946-1143 publishes relevant, interesting, and challenging articles of research, analysis, or promising practice related to models, technologies, and applications associated with earth observation in the broadest sense.
17) Philip Roth Studies <http://www.thepress.purdue.edu/journals/prs> print ISSN 1547-3929 & E-ISSN 1940-5278, the peer-reviewed semiannual journal is published by Purdue University Press in cooperation with the Philip Roth Society. The journal welcomes all writing pertaining entirely or in part to Philip Roth, his fiction, and his literary and cultural significance.
18) The Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement <http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/pjsl/> ISSN 2331-9143 is a multi-disciplinary open-access journal available in print and online dedicated to undergraduate students who conduct projects with strong service-learning and academic civic engagement aspects. By involving students in an intensive writing activity and showcasing the opportunities available at Purdue, the journal will enhance the use and effectiveness of the pedagogy of service-learning as a high-impact learning methodology.
19) Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies <http://www.thepress.purdue.edu/journals/shofar> print ISSN 0882-8539 & E-ISSN 1534-5165 is a quarterly interdisciplinary journal of Jewish studies and the official journal of the Midwest and Western Jewish Studies Associations published by Purdue University Press. Publications in Shofar range far and wide in a multidisciplinary world that spans four thousand years. It publishes scholarly articles, opinion pieces, readers' forums, pedagogical essays, and book reviews.
20) Studies in Jewish Civilization: How Today's Jews Celebrate, Commemorate, and Commiserate <http://www.thepress.purdue.edu/journals/studies-jewish-civilization> 1070-8510 is based on the annual symposium of the Klutznick Chair in Jewish Civilization. Articles in the journal are about Jewish history and culture around the world and throughout history. Recent volumes have taken a thematic approach, and are also made available as books.

Manuscripts are invited for publication in the series in fields of the study of culture, literature, the arts, media studies, communication studies, the history of ideas, etc., and related disciplines of the humanities and social sciences. Comparative cultural studies is a contextual approach in the study of culture in a global and intercultural context and work with a plurality of methods and approaches.

The demise of the Communist Bloc exposed the need for greater understanding of the broad stretch of Europe that lies between Germany and Russia. For more than three decades the Purdue University Press series in Central European Studies has enriched our knowledge of the region by producing monographs, advanced surveys and select collections at a price accessible to scholars and university students. Its extensive list of attractively produced and reasonably-priced titles by a broad range of international scholars focuses on the lands and peoples of the former Habsburg Empire, its successor states, and those areas lying along its immediate periphery.

The Casden Institute at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, supports research that aims to spur dialogue and achieve greater understanding not only about what it means to be Jewish in the United States, but what it means to be US-American in a pluralistic society. What can we learn from the historical and contemporary impact of Jews on US-American life? How have Jews interacted with other ethnic and religious groups? How has Jewish identity changed? What has the cultural expression of those changes been? Such inquiries can lead to a new appreciation for what it means to be Jewish, to be US-American, and to interact with people of other cultures.

6) New Directions in the Human-Animal Bond <http://www.thepress.purdue.edu/series/new-directions-human-animal-bond>. A dynamic relationship has always existed between people and animals. Each influences the psychological and physiological state of the other. This series of scholarly publications, published by Purdue University Press in collaboration with Purdue University’s School of Veterinary Medicine, expands our knowledge of the interrelationships between people, animals, and their environment. Manuscripts are welcomed on all aspects of human-animal interaction and welfare including therapy applications, public policy, and the application of humane ethics in managing our living resources.

8) Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures <http://www.thepress.purdue.edu/series/purdue-studies-romance-literatures> publishes books on topics of literary importance that make a significant contribution to Romance scholarship. Studies are written in English, Spanish, or French and deal with topics in French, Italian, Luso-Brazilian, Spanish, and Spanish American literatures. Scholars have told us that they use books published in Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures in their research and in graduate courses and seminars. Books in the series cover a wide range of topics including the comedia, seventeenth-century French literature, Italian and Latin American works, women's issues, and textual interpretation.
9) Shofar Supplements in Jewish Studies <http://www.thepress.purdue.edu/series/shofar-supplements-jewish-studies> is a book series linked to the journal Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies. Volumes range widely, appropriate for a multidisciplinary field such as Jewish studies, but they tend to focus more on Jewish literature, culture, and history in the modern period and recent past. The series accepts both single-author and edited manuscripts written for readership levels ranging from advanced undergraduate to post-graduate and faculty.
Purdue University Press is one of thirteen publishers to participate in the Knowledge Unlatched pilot, a global library consortium approach to funding open access books.[1]
