Pulau Keppel is a small private island in Singapore. It is flat, and it is located in Keppel Bay, between Singapore's main island and the island of Sentosa.[1][2] The island is connected to the mainland by the 250 m long cable stayed Keppel Bay Bridge, which opened in 2008. The bridge also carries the lines for power, water, and other services to the island.[3]
The island became prosperous in mid-19th century thanks to the development of the Keppel Harbour.[4] Pulau Keppel was used for shipbuilding and ship repair operations by Keppel Shipyard until 2000. The company which owned the island also prompted, in 1983, a change from its former name, Pulau Hantu, which literally means Ghost island, to its current one. The previous name was deemed to be disagreeable for customers, and Pulau Hantu is also the name of another island in Singapore; the government allowed the change.[1] The island was part of a waterfront luxury development effort after 2008 connected to the construction of the Keppel Bay Bridge, and now houses high-end restaurants and a marina for yachts.[4][5]
