Puchong is a major town in the Petaling district of Selangor, Malaysia. Puchong is situated midway between Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's political capital, and Putrajaya, the administrative capital.

History

The town used to be a rubber estate and tin-mining town in the 1960s. During the 1980s, Puchong consisted of a single two-lane road running through estates and villages. Since then, urbanization has occurred rapidly with many industrial parks, commercial centres and residential areas mushrooming along Jalan Puchong.

Background and Progress

Puchong serves as a residential town for three major cities, Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya and Petaling Jaya. New townships, such as Bandar Puchong Jaya, Pusat Bandar Puchong, Puchong Hartamas, Puchong Utama, Puchong Prima, Bandar Bukit Puchong, Saujana Puchong and Bandar Puteri Puchong, are sprouting from the once-abandoned lands, former plantations and cleared-forest areas, contributing to the population boom witnessed in Puchong. At an estimate, Puchong has a population of about 335,419 (the largest township is Puchong Jaya with a population of about 39,473).

Governance

Puchong is under the jurisdiction of two local authorities, that is the Subang Jaya Municipal Council in the northern part of Puchong and the Sepang Municipal Council in the southern part of Puchong.

Commerce

Puchong has both local and foreign banks.

There is a wet market called Puteri Mart at Bandar Puteri beside the MBA Stadium and the Town Park where residents can shop for their groceries. Residents of Puchong can also do their shopping in Tesco, IOI Mall (which has a multiplex and bowling alley), Giant, Jusco, Puchong Parade and Puchong Plaza shopping malls. Bank of China (M) Bhd opened its 6th branch in Malaysia at Tower 2, PFCC, Bandar Puteri Puchong in 2012.

IOI Boulevard is one of the business centres located here with retail and office units. A similar project by SP Setia called SetiaWalk Puchong has been partially completed, and though it look quiet from outside, but when you park in the basement which is the only way to access the shops in the center of the building apart from walking, there are many shops open inside. Block C of the building has not been completed yet. Block E of SetiaWalk (also known as SetiaWalk Mall) has a gym (Celebrity Fitness), a game station (Escape Room), a TGV cinema and a multiplex which houses a Subway outlet.[1]

Properties in Puchong

Major property developers in Puchong are IOI Properties, I&P Properties (focusing in Kinrara), Talam, Plenitude, Malton as well as many others.

Before the rapid development and commercialization of Puchong, there were only a handful of residential developments which comprises mostly low to medium-cost apartments as well as terrace houses. By 2010, luxurious condominiums, semi detached houses and bungalows are a common sight within the area. These high end properties are mostly located in Bandar Puteri and Bandar Kinrara.

The property prices in Puchong have increased tremendously as more people are migrating into the area due to the an abundance of amenities offered as well as being a safe and comfortable housing area. Furthermore, it was recently announced that there will be eleven (11) MRT stations planned for the township. The proposed stations are Bukit Kinrara, Giant Bandar Kinrara, Taman Perindustrian Kinrara, Puchong IOI Mall, Puchong Tesco Hypermarket & SP Setia Walk, Rakan Muda Sports Complex, Puchong Perdana, Puchong Perdana, Taman Puchong Prima, and Taman Puchong Permai.

Recreation

Michael's Badminton Academy, a privately owned 32-badminton court located in Bandar Puteri Puchong, is Malaysia's biggest badminton stadium. This stadium is owned by Michael, an old but still energetic man. However, in the month of January 2015, it was demolished but for unknown reasons. Rakan Muda Sports Complex is a sport centre which also serves the residents of Puchong with many kinds of sports including futsal and badminton. Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve is the remaining green lung in Puchong, it is a popular trekking spot for many active residents to enjoy nature. There are still many mining ponds around Puchong where locals engage in water sports and fishing.

Private hospitals Columbia Asia Hospital and KPMC Puchong Medical Centre are both located at Bandar Puteri Puchong.

Transport

Puchong is well-linked to other parts of Klang Valley via the Damansara-Puchong Expressway(LDP) and Puchong-Sungai Besi Highway. Puchong is also accessible via Federal Highway (exit at Motorola); Shah Alam Expressway and New Pantai Expressway (NPE). There are also bus services connecting Puchong to Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya.

Bus services are provided by RapidKL buses and Metrobus which have routes along Jalan Puchong to various destinations around Klang Valley. Taman Kinrara, one of the nearest housing estates to the city, is only about 30 metres from the border between Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

Puchong is currently not served by the RapidKL Light Rail Transit service. However, the Ampang Line is scheduled to be extended to Puchong by 2015. Train stations will be constructed near IOI Mall, Tesco, the Rakan Muda headquarters and the DHL/Tractor Malaysia building before diverting to Putra Heights (main hub) via Puchong Perdana. It is anticipated that residents will benefit from the extension because it will ease traffic congestion and make commuting without using private transport easier.
