Prionezhsky District (Russian: Прионе́жский райо́н; Karelian: Oniegan rannikon piiri) is an administrative district (raion), one of the fifteen in the Republic of Karelia, Russia.[1] As a municipal division, it is incorporated as Prionezhsky Municipal District.[3] It is located in the southeast of the republic. The area of the district is 3,665 square kilometers (1,415 sq mi). Its administrative center is the city of Petrozavodsk[2] (which is not administratively a part of the district).[1] Population: 21,502 (2010 Census);[5] 18,597 (2002 Census);[8] 25,439 (1989 Census).[9]
Administrative and municipal status
Within the framework of administrative divisions, Prionezhsky District is one of the fifteen in the republic.[1] The city of Petrozavodsk serves as its administrative center, despite being incorporated separately as a city of republic significance—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[1]
As a municipal division, the district is incorporated as Prionezhsky Municipal District, one of the sixteen municipal districts in the republic.[3] The city of republic significance of Petrozavodsk is incorporated separately from the district as Petrozavodsky Urban Okrug.[10]
