Princess Argjiro

Princess Argjiro is a legendary figure in Albanian mythology of whom Ismail Kadare wrote a poem in the 1960s.[1] According to ethnograph and historian Fotaq Andrea, she lived in the 15th century; she jumped off Gjirokastër Castle in the southern Albanian city of Gjirokastër,along with her child, in order to avoid being captured by the Ottomans.[2] Gjirokastër, which is located in the ancient region of Epirus which extends into Greece, was originally known by the Greek name Argyrokastro, and legend has it that the city was named for her, but it long predates Princess Argjiro's time.
