Prince Henry's Institute of Medical Research

Prince Henry's Institute of Medical Research (PHI) is a Melbourne based independent, not-for-profit, medical research institute based at Monash Medical Centre in Victoria, Australia.

History

Originally established in 1960 as the Medical Research Centre at Prince Henry's Hospital in South Melbourne, the Institute moved from its St Kilda Road premises during the amalgamation of Prince Henry’s Hospital with the Queen Victoria Medical Centre and Moorabbin Hospital. It now operates as an independent Institute based at Monash Medical Centre in Clayton, Melbourne, Australia.

The Institute’s name-sake originates from Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester whom served as the 11th Governor-General of Australia.

Mission

Prince Henry's Institute (PHI) is Australia's leading centre for hormones and reproductive medicine research. The institute has over 160 staff and students. Its stated vision is to "improve quality of life through the investigation of hormones in the fields of reproductive health, cancer diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease". Research at PHI includes fundamental laboratory research understanding human biology, translational studies focussed upon developing better diagnostics and new treatments and clinical programs improving patient care.

Affiliations

The Institute is an accredited institute of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, an affiliated institute of Southern Health, an affiliated institute of Monash University, a partner of the Monash Health Research Precinct, a member of the Cancer Council of Victoria, a member of the Victorian Breast Cancer Research Consortium Inc and an alliance partner with the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.

Funding

Funding is derived from competitive international and national government grants, charitable trusts and foundations, the corporate sector, private philanthropy and public donations.

Governance

In April 2008, Professor Matthew Gillespie became the fourth Director of the Institute.

In April 2009, Dr Robert (Bob) Edgar was appointed Chairman of the PHI Board of Directors.

Research Laboratories

The Institute comprises seventeen laboratories; Bone Joint & Cancer, Brain & Gender, Cancer Drug Discovery, Cardiovascular Endocrinology, Clinical Andrology, Endometrial Remodelling, Embryo Implantation, Growth Factor Signalling, Implantation & Placental Development, Male Fertility Regulation, Metabolism & Cancer, Ovarian Biology, Ovarian Cancer Biomarkers, Reproductive Development & Cancer, Reproductive Hormones, Sex Determination & Gonadal Development and Steroid Receptor Biology.
