There have been eight Prime Ministers of Slovenia, officially the President of the Government of Slovenia (Slovene: Predsednik Vlade Republike Slovenije) since the country gained parliamentary democracy in 1989, and independence in 1991. Unlike the President of Slovenia, who is directly elected, the prime minister is appointed by the National Assembly, and must control a majority there in order to govern.
