Prime Medical College, Rangpur

Prime Medical College is a school of medicine in Rangpur, Bangladesh. It is established by Dr. Akkas Ali Sarkar in 2008. At present the college is providing Bangladesh government-directed medical education under the University of Rajshahi. Prime Medical College is trying to be one of the trendsetter institutes in the country and demonstrate a high standard of medical education.

Course offered

The college offers a five-year MBBS course as approved by Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council (BM&DC) leading to MBBS degree of the University of Rajshahi.

Location

Prime Medical College is in Pirjabad, Badargonj Road, Rangpur, 330 kilometers from Dhaka, and 210 km from Rajshahi District. It is in the west part of the city of Rangpur; situated in Pirjabad by the side of Badargonj Road, which is about half a kilometer from the inter-country highway connecting India and Nepal. It is well connected by rail, road and air with the capital city Dhaka.

Campus

The college and hospital campus are under construction. The hospital building is on the western side of the college building. There is plan to build student hostels and staff quarters in the campus.

Any type of political activity is strongly prohibited on the campus.

College building

The Prime Medical College is a seven-stored building where construction up to 6th floor has been completed. All academic activities are going on here. The college building is very spacious with modern structural design. Every floor has a capacity of approximately 20,000 sq. ft. The college is able to teach around 200 students per year.

Internship

All students passing the final professional examination shall be required to undergo one year internship as prescribed by Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) at Prime Medical College Hospital. The internship is compulsory and a prerequisite for obtaining registration from the BMDC.

Prime Medical College Hospital

Prime Medical College Hospital is the teaching hospital of the college which started on 17 August 2007. It is a 750-bedded hospital.

The hospital is a seven-stored building with all the modern facilities. It is a specialized hospital in the northern region of Bangladesh which has well-equipped discipline of medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrical, Paediatric, Anesthesiology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Neurology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, ENT, Urology, Neurosurgery ICU unit and Neonatal ICU.

The Diagnostic Lab is well equipped with all the modern sophisticated medical equipment for Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology and Histopathology examination.

Dialysis Centre, Digital Color Doppler, Diagnostic centre are the additional services of this hospital. Nephrology unit with dialysis, CT scan, Ultrasound,Imaging, Digital X-Ray, ESWL Stone Crush Machine have been added. The hospital has a Physiotherapy Clinic, Blood Bank, & Dental unit. Emergency department is open round the clock. Ambulance service is available for 24 hours. The hospital conducts Clinico-Social services (cataract, cleft-lip and cleft-palate operations) for the poor. These services are provided free of costs. Dutch Bangla Bank is the main partner of these services.

Teaching facilities

Prime Medical College and its allied hospitals render the teaching facilities in lecture galleries, dissection halls, tutorial rooms, museums, college conference room, laboratories, seminar rooms and library. It also provides equipment for practical classes and laboratory work. The medium of teaching is English

Admission process

The admission process of undergraduate MBBS course for all medical colleges (government and private) in Bangladesh is conducted centrally by the DGHS (Health Deerment) Ministry of Health. The test comprises a written MCQ exam, which is held simultaneously at all medical colleges. Candidates are selected for admission based on merit list. The admission test consists of the written MCQ (multiple choice questions) exam. 1% seat is reserved for children of freedom fighters. 5% seat is reserved for free studentship. 10% seat is reserved for governing body, but not more than 10.

Other courses offered

Prime Nursing College

Prime Nursing College established in March, 2010. It is temporarily situated in the Prime Medical College building. Soon Prime Nursing College will be shifted to its own new building.
