Austin Cook "Prex" Merrill (January 15, 1884 – February 23, 1935) was an American football coach in the United States.[1] Merrill attended West Virginia University, graduating in law in 1912 as well as Yale University, where he received his A.B..[2][3]
Coaching career
Merrill was the head college football coach for the Alderson–Broaddus Battlers located in Philippi, West Virginia. He held that position for the 1910 season.[4] His coaching record at Alderson–Broaddus was 1 wins and 3 losses. As of the conclusion of the 2012 season, this ranks him #8 at Alderson–Broaddus in total wins and #6 at the school in winning percentage (.250).[5] Merrill also did coaching work at Bethany College, also in West Virginia. He later worked as a lawyer.[6] He was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi and Theta Nu Epsilon fraternities while at WVU.[7]
Merrill died of a heart attack due to coronary thrombosis in 1935.[8] At the time of his death, Merrill was serving as a Clerk for the U.S. District Court for Northern West Virginia.[9]
