Places of interest

Porumamilla features many temples. The town holds festivals every year, such as Sankranthi, Dussera, Diwali or Deepavali. Porumalilla Lake is the largest man-made lake in YSR district.this tank is also named as [[Anantharajasagara]]. It was constructed by king Bhaskara Bhavadura, son of Bukka Raya I of Sangama dynasty, who is one of the founders of Vijayanagara empire. Bhaskara Bhavadura was appointed as governer of eastern provinces which he ruled from Udayagiri. The endowment of the tank was done by his general Anantapalayya.Three ancient inscriptions on Porumamilla tank, dating back to 1369 AD, are found near the old Sivalayam at Bhairavakonda in Dommanapalle village, about 6-km from Porumamilla mandalheadquarters. These throws an abundant light on the elaborate system carried ot in the method of construction of tanks and dams in the medieval south india, the record gives complete details of the tank porumanilla. The actual construction of the Anantraj Sagar began on Shukla Chaturdashi,Shake 1291, i.e 15th October 1369. The construction was completed in two years time. There were thousands of labourers and craftsmen working here and hundreds of bullock carts were also used for caring material. The length of the dam was 5000 dand, width was 800 dand and the height was 7 dand. (One dand = One Mtr.). This lake has been very justly glorified, and the importance of water and irrigation is also signified, furthur the author of the record mentions the 12 sadhanas (merits) of the porumamilla tank in particular and six dosas (defects) of tanks in general. There is mention of Lord Brahma also who prefers to sit on the lotus which is always found on the water bed. This is one and only lake in the world history which adds to the treasury of a ruler. One can conclude from all of these points that how advanced India was in the field of hydrology and water resource engineering in the ancient times. So being a civil engineer i feel proud to be born in this place.
