The 2016 Portuguese presidential election will be held in January 2016 and if no candidate achieves 50% of the votes in the first round there will be a second round in February 2016. This election will choose the successor of the current President Aníbal Cavaco Silva.
Procedure
Any Portuguese citizen over 35 years old has the opportunity to run for president. In order to do so it is necessary to gather between 7500 and 15000 signatures and submit them to the Portuguese Constitutional Court.
According to the Portuguese Constitution, to be elected, a candidate needs a majority (50% + 1). If no candidate gets this majority there will take place a second round between the two most voted candidates.

- Castanheira Barros, Independent, former member of the Social Democratic Party. [1]
- Henrique Neto, member and former MP of the Socialist Party.[2]
- Paulo Freitas do Amaral, Independent. [3]
- Paulo de Morais, Independent, former deputy mayor of Porto (2002-2005), strong advocate against corruption in Portugal.[4]

- Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, former leader of the Social Democratic Party (1996–1999).[5]
- António Guterres, former Prime Minister (1995–2002).[6]
- Fernando Nobre, Independent candidate that contested the 2011 presidential election.[7]
- António de Sampaio da Nóvoa, former Rector of the University of Lisbon (2006–2013).[8]
- António Vitorino, former European Commissioner (1999-2004).[9]
- Pedro Santana Lopes, former Prime Minister (2004–2005).[10]
- Rui Rio, former mayor of Porto (2002–2013).[11]
- Paulo Portas, leader of the People's Party (1998–2005, 2007– ), former Minister of National Defence (2002–2005) and of Foreign Affairs (2011–2013) and current Deputy Prime Minister (2013– ).[12]
- Manuel Carvalho da Silva, former union leader of CGTP (1986–2012).[13]
- Manuela Ferreira Leite, former leader of the Social Democratic Party (2008–2010).[14]
