The Port of Hualien (Chinese: 花蓮港; pinyin: Huālián Gǎng) is an international port in Hualien County, Taiwan. It is located in Hualien City, facing the Pacific Ocean in the east. It is an artificial harbor build in 1930–1939, protected by breakwaters. There are 25 wharves in Hualien Port. The annual container volume is about 13 million tons. The port mainly transports local gravel, cement, and marble. It also develops tourism and leisure industry, such as cruises and whale-watching boats.[2]
History
The Port of Hualien was constructed from 1930 to 1939 (Japanese rule), for carrying local granulated sugar to Japan and transporting island-round cargos. The government declared it as one of the four international harbors in 1963. The harbor facilities have been improved in an expansion project in 1991.
