Port San Antonio

Not to be confused with San Antonio, Chile.

Port San Antonio is a multi-purpose, 1,900-acre (7.7 km2) facility in San Antonio, Texas, USA established to serve as an aerospace complex, international airport and industrial hub with two railroads and close access to three interstate highways. Established at the former site of Kelly Air Force Base, the 1,900-acre (7.7 km2) facility is centrally located between the coasts of the United States and along the NASCO corridor between Canada and Mexico.[1] Port San Antonio enjoys designation as a Foreign Trade Zone (#80-10).

Originally established in 1995 by the San Antonio City Council as the Greater Kelly Development Authority, it was re-established under its current name in 2007. Its tenants include such companies as The Boeing Company, Lockheed Martin, Pratt & Whitney, CDI Technology Services, and Standard Aero. Currently in the planning stage is a Town Center project at the port's center which would offer office space as well as provide retail, dining and housing options.

There are more than 70 companies with facilities at Port San Antonio, including aerospace, information technology and heavy industrial customers, among others. According to a 2010 study, the 13 aerospace companies operating out of the Port were found to have accounted for $1.46 billion in annual economic activity for the region.

Transportation

Transportation offerings for Port San Antonio include Kelly Field airport which features an adjacent 11,500-foot (3,500 m) runway, accessibility by the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe class I railroads, and three interstate highways: IH-35; IH-10; and IH-37. Kelly Field's runway is operated jointly with Lackland Air Force Base.

Markets of more than 90 million people are within two days drive of Port San Antonio. Five major seaports are accessible within a three-hour drive: the Ports of Houston (TX), Corpus Christi (TX), Manzanillo (Mexico), Lázaro Cárdenas (Mexico) and Veracruz (Mexico).

Kelly Field

Port San Antonio's Kelly Field (SKF) has an 11,500-foot (3,505 m) runway which can handle all types of heavy lift aircraft. Immediately adjacent to the runway is 575 acres (232.7 hectares) of mixed use airport property. The Port's airfield has sufficient space available on the ramp areas and terminals for quick re-fueling and efficient turnarounds. The airfield is operated under a joint use agreement with Lackland Air Force Base. Both entities are located on either side of the runway, which affords the airport exceptional security.

East Kelly Railport

Port San Antonio's East Kelly Railport sits at the center of a railway intersection which services the NASCO corridor from Mexico to Canada, as well as the East and West Coasts of the United States. The East Kelly Railport has access to two Class I railroads, Union Pacific and the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe, and is immediately adjacent to the Union Pacific's South San Antonio Classification Yard, which is the destination for most local industry traffic. This location is utilized for various shipments, including bulk industrial, products for manufacturing, and bulk retail goods. The East Kelly Railport has direct rail access to the following deep water Ports: Houston (TX); Corpus Christi (TX); Long Beach (CA); Los Angeles (CA); Lázaro Cárdenas (Mexico); Manzanillo (Mexico); Veracruz (Mexico); Tampico (Mexico); and Altamira (Mexico).

The East Kelly Railport also has direct access to the following major US cities: Dallas (TX); Kansas City (KS); Chicago (IL); and Detroit (MI).

US Customs- Federal Inspection Services (FIS)

Port San Antonio has an on-site, Federal Inspection Services (FIS) facility for international cargo and agricultural products. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency is the primary authority for assessing and collecting duties, taxes and fees on imported goods. The FIS facility opened in early 2009 and is manned by a U.S. Customs and Agricultural Inspector.

Town Center

The Port San Antonio Town Center project is to be constructed on a 400 acres (1.6 km2) plot in the middle of the facility. It is intended to provide office space to businesses and to offer dining and retail opportunities for employees of the Port's tenants. It is also intended to include residential space. The area currently hosts a 1940s office building and an 80 acres (0.32 km2) area of existing bungalows used in the 1920s to house Air Force personnel. The properties will be working to incorporate the historic structures as part of Kelly Town Center.
