Port George is a community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in Annapolis County. Situated on the Bay of Fundy, it is a former fishing port.[1] Port George lies on the 45th parallel north.[2]
Originally established in 1760 as Gate's Landing or Gate's Breakwater it is thought to have be named for King George III in 1812.[3]
Recognizable landmarks on its shorefront are the historic pepperpot lighthouse and the steeple of the old United Baptist church.
The community-owned pepperpot lighthouse, which dates to 1889, is an important navigational aid in the area. Originally it was sited on the end of one of two wharves, but when that wharf succumbed to storm damage it was moved in the early 1930s to its present position next to the road. The lighthouse is unusual in that it has a red fresnel light.[4][5]
The Port George United Baptist church with its distinctive steeple was built in 1887.[6] It is now a private residence.
Port George is a popular summer destination, with pretty cottages, some small seasonal art and gift shops[7] and a provincial picnic park at Cottage Cove overlooking a seal colony on Dunn's Rock.[8] Nearby is the community wharf with a new concrete boat ramp. One of few along this stretch of coastline.
It is also well known for its annual country jamboree which takes place on the last Saturday of July every year. This is held on the lawn of the recreation centre overlooking the Bay of Fundy. The popular all-day event has a number of local country music acts together with other activities including a 200 table flea market. It starts off with a pancake breakfast and ends with a baked bean supper.[9] The 32nd Port George Jamboree attracted an estimated crowd of about 3,000.[10]
A weekend of bluegrass and oldtime music is held every May holiday weekend at the recreation centre with a variety show on Saturday evening and a gospel concert on the Sunday morning.
