Polygamy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
The legal status of polygamy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is currently unclear. While the nation has been said to have legally recognized polygamous unions in the past, their current legal recognition is unknown. Despite this, the practice of polygamy, not the legal recognition of, is far from simply common, having been reported to be rampant in the country.[1] Others have insisted that while the traditional form of marriage is monogamy, a similar practice of relation with polygamy known as "deuxième bureau" (or "the second office").[2] However, polygamy is officially illegal in the country,[3] though reports of such arrests have yet to be known.
