Polygamy in Sri Lanka

While polygamy is illegal in Sri Lanka, Muslim men take up to four wives, as allowed by Islam. Very few Muslim Sri Lankans, who make up 7% of the mostly Buddhist country (at 70%), have taken multiple wives. Like most countries that allow for polygamous unions, the husband must notify his first wife prior to taking additional wives.^[1]

Sri Lankan law limits polygamy to Muslim men, although, polygamy and polyandry were practiced with the royal family.^[2]
