Political make-up of local councils in the United Kingdom

This is a list of the political make-up of principal local and regional authorities, commonly known as local councils, in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, following the May 2014 local government elections. There are 433 principal authorities in the UK: 27 county councils, 55 unitary authorities, 32 London boroughs, 36 Metropolitan boroughs, 201 districts, 32 Scottish unitary authorities, 22 Welsh unitary authorities, and 26 Northern Ireland districts (the City of London and the Isles of Scilly are non-party based). This list does not include parish and town councils, the lowest tier of local government with limited powers.

The three main parties in Great Britain, the Conservatives, Labour, and the Liberal Democrats, have the most councillors, with 40%, 35%, and 11% of the total respectively. The Scottish National Party has the most in Scotland of any party, and Plaid Cymru is second to Labour in number of councillors in Wales. Northern Ireland is controlled by parties local to the province. Several minor nationwide parties hold a number of seats across the UK, most prominently the United Kingdom Independence Party, and the Green Party. There are thousands of independent or Residents' association councillors, and many local political parties hold seats and sometimes form part of council administrations.

Representation by party in Great Britain

Conservative councillors predominate in English county and district councils and hold a plurality of English Unitary Authority seats, where as the Labour party is dominant in Greater London boroughs, Metropolitan boroughs and Welsh Unitary Authorities. Scottish National Party (SNP) councillors slightly outnumber Labour ones on Scottish Unitary Authorities.
